LONDON, Ont. - A man convicted in a hit-and-run collision that killed a Western University student has been handed a five-month jail sentence.

Darrin Norton, 36, of St. Thomas, was also ordered to complete two years of probation and 100 hours of community service in connection with the death of 22-year-old Joshua Switzer.

Switzer was struck and killed instantly during the early morning hours of May 19, 2012, while jogging home after a night out with friends.

Norton pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident causing death.

The Crown had requested a prison term of two to three years, while defence lawyers had requested probation and a fine.
