A group of 18 students from a Perth County high school are finally flying home after an unexpected extended stay in Spain.
A four-day strike by Lufthansa pilots last week left the students from St. Marys DCVI, along with three teachers, stranded in Madrid.
They had been in Spain and Portugal on a school trip since March 13 and found out on Friday that their return flight on Saturday had been cancelled.
The airline and insurance covered the costs of their extended stay, but there have been some tense moments for students and their parents back home - knowing that the next available flight home would be days later than planned.
The group is expected to be back in Canada early Wednesday evening, and back home in St. Marys by midnight.
A history class from Oakridge Secondary School also had their March Break trip to Rome extended by the Lufthansa pilots' strike.
They are home now, but there were some nervous moments as their flights home were cancelled as well.
A small group of students from Goderich was also impacted by the overseas strike.
