A cement company has been fined $75,000 in connection with a leg injury suffered by a worker who became trapped in a sand and gravel hopper.
The Labour Ministry says St. Marys Cement pleaded guilty to a charge under the Occupational Health and Safety Act in connection with the July 2013 incident.
Court heard the worker in Sunderland was trying to remove a gravel blockage in the hopper when a conveyor belt started and the gravel began to flow.
The release of the blockage caused the worker to drop part-way down the hole and become trapped in the hopper, resulting in the injury.
