It’s a privilege enjoyed on residential streets across London - free daytime parking.

But homeowners in one London neighbourhood may soon have to start paying up to $120 a year to park in front of their homes.

Neighbours believe they're paying to fix a problem caused by city hall.

The new Springbank medical centre on Trowbridge Avenue charges $4 for its lot, so drivers started parking on the street.

“It was from the end to the beginning, both sides,” says Dorothy Engel.

The city erected no parking signs, but now residents can't park in front of their houses. A new proposal would see special permits issued to homeowners.

Near Kings University College, homeowners pay nothing for a residential parking permit.

On Trowbridge an annual charge of $60 per permit is being proposed.

Councillor Denise Brown says the city approved zoning for the clinic, so it should cover the costs.

“The people at the north end of the city don’t pay, it’s called a pilot project, the never ending pilot project, cause it started about three years ago,” says Brown.

But when the pilot project was approved council endorsed a fee for all future streets. City staff say Trowbridge is the tip of the iceberg and there are a couple of other sites that will be opening shortly which may have similar situations.

Homeowners will be asked to accept the parking permit program in an upcoming survey.
