An usual approach is being suggested to stop drivers from going the wrong way on one-way streets.

It has become a such a chronic problem in Wortley Village, that fear is growing its just a matter of time before someone gets seriously hurt.

Seeing drivers go down a one way, the wrong way is so common on a pair of streets in Old South that Jared Vaghan barely notices.

"I'm only here about 10 minutes so one or two a day, but over there I work for hours every day so 20, 30 times probably," says Vaghan.

Two one-way streets lead into Wortley Village, Bruce Street from the west and Elmwood from the east.

Until now the city's answer has been to wallpaper the two streets with one-way signs, but it's proven not to be enough, so neighbours are calling for a more radical approach.

They want to stop trying to change driver behaviour and just change the streets.

Councillor Denise Brown will ask city staff to look into the idea next week.

"We just need to look at it, I just don't see the need for one way, its not like it's King Street or Queens Ave," says Brown.

But the idea may hit some speed bumps.

Some homeowners believe Bruce Street isn't wide enough for two-way traffic unless existing street parking is removed.

Others worry traffic volumes could increase, actually making the area more dangerous.

Brown will raise the issue at the Civic Works Committee on Monday.
