The sentencing hearing for a man who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the stabbing death of 19-year-old Jared McKnight began Monday.
Perry Eggett Jr., 25, stabbed Jared in the chest the evening of May 31, 2012, in a case of mistaken identity.
The court has heard that Eggett was retaliating after a woman - his cousin - was shot in the butt by a BB gun in a fight involving Jordan McKnight, Jared's then 16-year-old brother.
In court on Monday, Jared's family delivered emotional victim impact statements.
Outside the courthouse, Jared's mother Lori Scott tells CTV News, "Don't ever tell me to get over it, you don't get over [losing] a child...I just want to see [Eggett] never see the light of day, the same way my son is. "
Heather Cable was in court with her son Marcus, a boy who will never meet his father - Jared.
"My son has to go an entire lifetime without a father...He doesn't have a father to teach him out to fix a car, how to play soccer, any of that."
Eggett also addressed the court, saying "I regret it. I wish it never happened and I could take it back.
The Crown is asking for a sentence of nine years while the defence is looking for six to seven years.
The hearing continues on Tuesday afternoon.
