After a fire destroyed Seaforth’s only grocery store earlier this year, Seaforth Foodland reopened Friday.

Over a hundred people turned out to welcome the community’s only grocery store Friday morning at 9 a.m., nearly eight months after the building was flattened by a fire.

Some residents lined up for an hour before opening to be among the first to try out the new store.

Construction began in August and the store opened three weeks ahead of schedule, a pleasant surprise for both shoppers and the store's owners, Steve and Barb DelChiaro.

"We've had people that didn't believe it, I think the coffee shop had a pool on me, whether it'd be open for Christmas or not." Steve says.

For many there is great relief after the inconvenience of having to leave town to get any of the essentials.

Fire investigators suspected arson back in April, but police have yet to find a suspect. An initial estimate pegged damage at around $2 million.

While under construction, parent company Sobeys bussed people to nearby stores in Clinton and Mitchell.
