A family from Corunna, Ont. has a lot of extra celebrating to do this holiday season - and a lot of diaper changing too - after welcoming three bouncing baby girls.
When Stacey Myers and Mark Colwell went for their first ultrasound, they left in disbelief.
Myers says it was "A big shock for both of us, but it was exciting." But as the appointment went on, she says it also became a little nervewracking.
"They kind of do their scan, the ultrasound, and first they saw one heartbeat, and then they saw a second one, and then they turned the monitor away from me so I didn't quite see what was going on - and they pointed to the screen with a shocked look on their face. And I though 'Oh my gosh, there's a third one.'"
Born December 14, Londyn, Madison and Kenley are identical triplets, an extremely rare event. While Londyn is the oldest, the others were born just a few minutes later.
It's so rare, doctors at The Children's Hospital at the London Health Sciences Centre aren't sure it's ever happened there before.
The triplets remain in the hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. They are still very small, weighing about three pounds each.
But they're doing well and while mom and dad are hoping to get them home soon, that will also be a challenge.
Myers says "We're nervous about taking them home, but we feel prepared and we have everything we need."
And even though they'll be dealing with diapers, bottles, and babies times three, the rapidly expanding family says they wouldn't have it any other way.
"It was the best Christmas present we could have asked for," Myers says.
Colwell and Myers say they have a great support system in place and have even had three baby showers for the girls, so they should be set to go when everyone is ready to go home.
Meanwhile doctors say this kind of event is so rare it only happens in one in 500,000 pregnancies, or one set in Ontario every three years.
