Following lengthy campaigns lobbying the province, Dr. Rick Mann, Regional Supervising Coroner for West Region announced Thursday that an inquest will be held into the deaths of Adam Brunt and Gary Kendall.

Kendall, a volunteer firefighter, died in an ice rescue exercise near Sarnia in 2010 while a similar incident claimed the life of firefighting student Adam Brunt in 2015 in Hanover.

The families have been demanding an inquest for some time.

According to the families of the victims, courses aren't mandatory and companies aren't required to follow best practices established for firefighters.

The inquest will examine the events leading up to and surrounding their deaths.

The jury may make recommendations in hopes of preventing similar deaths.

It's still not clear when and where the inquest will take place.
