As the preliminary hearing into the death of a inmate at the Elgin Middlesex Detention Centre got underway Monday, the charges against one of three correctional officers were officially dropped.

Twenty-nine-year-old Adam Kargus was found dead in the shower area of the detention centre in November 2013. He had been beaten to death.

Another inmate, Anthony George, has been charged with second-degree murder in the case.

The preliminary hearing that began Monday surrounds three EMDC staff members facing charges.

Manager Stephen Jurkus and corrections officer Leslie Lonsbary are both charged with failing to provide the necessaries of life.

A similar charge against corrections officer Gregory Langford was officially dropped.

Evidence presented at the preliminary hearing cannot be released because of a ban on publication.
