Seven boats have been destroyed at the Port Elgin Harbour after an explosion officials say shook the whole community.

Fire crews were called to the scene around 2:40 a.m. after neighbours of the harbour heard a loud boom.

Several boats sitting near the harbour, which had pulled from the water for winter, were on fire, according to Saugeen Shores Police.

While the fire continued until around 7 a.m. - with flames sometimes shooting 100 feet in the air - crews were able to limit the spread to other boats nearby.

A nearby washroom building was also damaged.

There were no injuries reported.

The Ontario Fire Marshal is investigating along with local police, but there are no details yet on what may have caused the explosion.

However, officials say arson is not suspected in the incident and have been asking owners about any work done recently to their boats.
