St. Thomas police charged a man with numerous offences after receiving multiple calls about a man breaking into a house in the north end of the city.

Police say one of the calls was from "an extremely frantic female who was calling from inside the residence."

Two officers arrived on scene around 8:30 p.m. Saturday and found a man who had broken into the home and was wielding a sledgehammer.

Police say the man refused to comply with demands to drop the weapon so a taser was used on him.

Police say the taser did not subdue the man, who they described as "enraged."

After other officers arrived, the suspect was eventually taken into custody without injury to anyone.

The woman inside and the man are known to each other, police said.

A 63-year-old former resident of St.Thomas was to appear in court via video.
