The identity of the man who died just off the main beach in Port Stanley has been released by Elgin County OPP.
Alvarado Maynor, 48 of London, was transported via air ambulance to the London Health Sciences Centre on Saturday, where he was pronounced dead.
Around 3:30 p.m. Saturday, a man was standing with family members in waist to chest deep water about 75 metres off shore of the main beach area. Witnesses say the man appeared to suffer some type of medical distress, which alerted his nearby family members.
The Port Stanley Beach Patrol saw the family and the man in distress and quickly responded with their rescue boat. The man was able to pull himself into the rescue boat with the assistance of the lifeguards, but then collapsed. St. Thomas-Elgin paramedics and firefighters were also on the scene assisting.
A post mortem is scheduled for Monday to determine a cause of death.
Investigation is continuing.
