An investigation is underway after what St. Thomas police are calling a suspicious fire that "appears to be deliberately set."

Police and fire crews were called to a fire at a vacant building at 360 Talbot Street around 3:45 a.m. on Thursday.

The fire was contained to the rear entranceway of the building and no other units were affected, but extensive damage is being reported.

Police say the cause of the fire is unknown but it is being treated as suspicious.

The St. Thomas Police Service Criminal Investigation Bureau is investigationg, and any witnesses are asked to come forward.

Streets around the building were closed early Thursday as fire crews dealth with the blaze, but they have since re-opened.
