A pole fitness event is being held Saturday in London in order to support SafeSpace, a non-profit organization working to prevent violence toward women.

“Take Back the Pole” will feature a showcase from pole fitness athletes and free classes for the public. Among the performers will be London based instructor Lee Mattox.

“Take Back the Pole” comes after a pole fitness demonstration proposed for the “Take Back the Night” march was cancelled.

London Abused Women’s Centre (LAWC) said it would be withdrawing its support from the march over pole dancing saying pole-dancing condones violence against women.

Organizers for Saturday’s event say in a release that:

“Contrary to stereotypes, it is first and foremost a challenging fitness program for both men and women. Pole fitness empowers men and women to be fit, strong and confident with their bodies.  Many state the sport has helped them shed the pain of past abuse.  It’s for this reason that athletes are banding together to raise funds and awareness in the fight against violence against women.”

The event on Saturday starts with classes from 1:30 p.m. until 5 p.m. at The Pole House. The showcase will begin at 6 p.m.
