Norfolk County OPP say a 73-year-old woman stopped along Highway 24 to help a house fire victim, but was killed when she was hit by a passing car.

She has been identified by police as Carol Grant.

OPP say the collision took place on Highway 24 in Waterford at about 5:30 p.m. on Monday.

Officers were called to the incident in front of an earlier house fire which EMS had just started to clear from.

Investigation revealed that the woman had been travelling southbound on Highway 24 with an acquaintance when they stopped on the roadside across from the fire scene to offer assistance to the fire victim that was known to them.

As she was crossing the road she was struck by a northbound Saturn car being driven by 41-year-old Brantford woman.

Police say as a result of the collision, Grant sustained fatal injuries.

The driver of the car was transported to hospital by Norfolk County Paramedics as a precaution.  No physical injuries were reported.

OPP traffic investigators are assisting with the investigation.
