TORONTO - The union representing some school support staff says if the trustee associations follow through on their threat to dock their pay, they will escalate job action.
Paul Elliott, the president of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation, which represents some of Ontario's school support staff, says they are some of the lowest-paid employees in the education system.
He says it is "beyond reasoning" that the government would authorize action against his hard-working members.
The trustee associations asked the Liberal government for permission to dock the pay of elementary teachers and support staff represented both by OSSTF and the Canadian Union of Public Employees, who had been on work-to-rule campaigns.
The government reached deals with the other two unions Monday, ending their work-to-rule strikes, but gave consent for the pay of the OSSTF workers to be docked if they don't end their job action.
If the trustee associations follow through, they would have to give OSSTF five days notice, which hasn't yet happened, but if it does, Elliott says his members will escalate their strike.
