OPP are investigating after someone found human remains in an area east of Port Burwell, Ont.

Provincial police are saying little else about the heavy police presence along the Lake Erie shoreline that began midday Monday.

The remains were reportedly discovered on the side of a bluff, and a police helicopter was seen making two trips - once carrying out a rescue sled (designed to carry people) and then a large rectangular object.

A command centre was set up and several cruisers along with a forensics van were seen in the area of Lakeshore Line near Clarke Road.

Kerrie Kipp lives a short distance away and says she got a knock on her door on Monday afternoon.

"It was nerve-wracking...it was two OPP investigators and they just questioned me about a 'suspicious death' that they were investigating."

Willy Martens, who regularly gathers with friends for a bonfire and a beer in a nearby clearing, says they noticed something different on Saturday, a refrigerator that wasn't there the week before.

"I seen stuff down there, like a fridge and whatnot, but I didn't really think of anything...it looked like it had just been tumbled down and was laying there."

Elgin County OPP Const. Adam Crewdson says, "We have found human remains...a complainant came across them."

Police say that there is no threat to public safety, but area residents say they're still uneasy.

Elgin County OPP are working with the Office of the Chief Coroner on the investigation.
