Greg Simard, 24, who pleaded guilty to attempted murder in the assault of a 12-year-old boy found seriously injured behind the Child and Parent Resource Institute (CPRI), will learn if he will be held criminally responsible on June 28.

Ontario Court Justice Jeanine LeRoy reserved her decision Friday on whether Simard was so mentally ill he didn’t know what he was doing when he beat the boy on Sept. 9, 2012.

Simard was sent for a 30-day psychiatric assessment at the Regional Mental Health Centre in St. Thomas.

The family of the boy, who has autism, believes Simard should go to jail.

The boy, a resident at the CPRI, was found with severe trauma. Simard was a full-time contract employee at the CPRI and was known to the victim.
