All eastbound and westbound lanes of Highway 401 at Furnival Road were closed after a truck collided with an overpass.

OPP say a transport truck was westbound on the highway when it struck the bridge abutment in the median around 4 p.m. Thursday.

The driver of the truck, 49-year-old Jacob Wall of the Municipality of Bayham, was killed in the single-vehicle crash.

The tractor trailer was completely destroyed in the collision. The bridge pillar appeared to have only minor damage, but a closer examination will be necessary.

The highway was closed for hours, with westbound traffic being diverted off Highway 401 at Graham Road (Highway 76), causing a back up of over a kilometre during the evening rush hour.

Eastbound traffic was also being diverted off the highway at Orford Road.

The eastbound lanes re-opened around 12:30 a.m. Friday, while the westbound lanes re-opened around 1 a.m.

Police continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
