As the final budget decisions were made, Mayor Joe Fontana confirmed there won’t be a third consecutive tax freeze in 2013.

So for the first time since Fontana was elected, property taxes in London will go up.

Fontana announced he would no longer push for more cuts to achieve his election promise just before debate began on the operating budget Thursday afternoon.

After the last budget meeting, the proposed tax increase was at 1.2 per cent, or about $30 for the average London homeowner.

In the end, it was decided that is what taxpayers will be facing on the their property tax bills.

In order to achieve a tax free, the mayor would have needed to find an additional $5.6 million in revenue or savings.

But the Fontana says the priority for city council should now be on job creation.
