A new trial is set to begin Monday morning in the case of baby Ryker, the infant who died after being scalded with coffee.

Ryker was burned by a cup of instant coffee in Strathroy in May of 2015, and died as a result.

Ryker’s mother, Amanda Dumont and her partner Scott Bakker were charged with criminal negligence causing death and failing to provide the necessaries of life.

A mistrial was declared back in December when Dumont fell ill with appendicitis.

The judge said that since Dumont was prescribed narcotics, she could not fully participate in her trial -- which is her right.

In the new trial the accused will have their case heard by a judge alone, instead of a jury.

Shortly after the mistrial, one of the jurors took her own life. Counselling had been offered to jury member after the disturbing and graphic nature of the details heard in court.

The new trial is expected to last four to five weeks.

CTV’s Nick Paparella will be in court Monday morning and will have a full report on the day’s proceedings at 6 p.m.
