Seven soldiers were taken to hospital after two military vehicles collided east of Meaford on Thursday morning.

Highway 26 between 3rd Line and the Town of Blue Mountains-Meaford Townline was closed for much of the morning, but had reopen by 3 p.m.

The Grey County OPP was called to the scene around 7:40 a.m. after two Armoured Fighting Vehicles or AFVs reportedly collided.

Police say both vehicles were eastbound on Highway 26 when the lead vehicle stopped, causing the second AFV to hit the rear of the first vehicle.

The collision caused extensive damage to the two vehicles and about 300 litres of diesel fuel to spill onto the roadway.

The Ministry of the Environment was called in due to the spill.

Seven soldiers sufferend non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to hospital, four to Meaford and three to Collingwood.

Meaford Fire, Grey and Simcoe County EMS, Blue Mountain OPP, Military Police, Military Mobile Support Equipment Safety Officers from Petawawa and Meaford and the Ministry of Transportation all assisted at the scene.

An investigation into the collision continues.
