A man suffered significant injuries following an alleged assault on Walpole Island First Nation over the weekend.

Walpole Island Police and the OPP were called to the Thunderbird Plaza around 2:30 p.m. Sunday for reports of an assault.

Investigators say a man was punched in the facial area which resulted in injuries that required treatment in hospital.

Given the severity of the injuries, members of the community present at the time have reported that a weapon may have been involved.

However, the Walpole Island Police are assuring the community that the use of any kind of weapon has not yet been verified.

As a result of the investigation, 35-year-old Peter Joel Hopkins of Moravian First Nation has been charged with assault causing bodily harm, breach of probation and causing a disturbance.
