A man has been charged in a stabbing on New Year's day that happened on Richmond Street in downtown London.

London police say around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday officers observed a physical altercation in the area of Richmond Street near King Street.

A 32-year-old female and a 46-year-old male both sustained non-life threatening injuries in the exchange.

One male was arrested after a short foot pursuit and a female was arrested a short time later.

The four people involved were known to one another.

Police say as a result of the investigation, 23-year-old Catlin Ireland of no fixed address has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault and one count of possessing a weapon while prohibited.

He will be attending court Thursday morning. The female was released without charges.
