A 21-year-old man has been arrested after London’s police chief says he noticed suspicious activity in his neighbourhood.
Chief Brad Duncan was taking his dog for a walk around 5:15 a.m. on Thursday when he saw two males around a vehicle in a neighbouring driveway.
The chief confronted the men and they fled. Duncan, who is 56, gave chase - arresting one man in a nearby backyard after a brief struggle.
“I simply identified myself as a police officer, told him he was under arrest for trespassing. There was a little bit of an altercation in terms of I don’t think he really wanted to come along with me, but at the end of the day we made it to the front of my property and an opportunity for me to actually secure him.”
He then called police and a uniformed officer attended to continue with the investigation.
Kyle Pettigrew, 21, of London, was charged with the trespassing at night and resisting arrest. A second suspect remains at large.
Duncan, who has been with the force since 1980, hasn’t been on the streets for about 14 years.
But he says “I have an obligation. We know as officers 24/7 is our oath…I did what I’m expected to do and what I would expect any one of our members to do.”
He adds that off-duty arrests by police officers happen all the time and this is no different, but his neighbours say they’re impressed and feel safer already.
One was so impressed in fact, that they dropped by with a plate of brownies to show their appreciation.
