Police in St. Thomas are investigating after a man allegedly threatened officers with an axe and a hatchet on Thursday.

Officers were called to an apartment on John Street shortly after midnight for a noise complaint, but the incident reportedly turned violent.

Police say a 42-year-old man was taken into custody after barricading himself in the apartment and threatening officers with weapons.

No injuries were reported, but the incident took several hours to diffuse.

St. Thomas police Sgt. Luke Cummings says, "There was a term of negotiation from probably midnight until about 4 a.m., when we had discussions with him over an extended period of time. And as a result of that we were able to make entry and arrest him."

The incident is considered to be isolated and police say there was no threat to public safety.
