A Londoner and his friend are headed overseas to embark on a 10,000 mile adventure across some of the most challenging terrain on earth, and it’s all for a good cause.

London’s Mike Longhurst, 26, and his friend, 29-year-old Cyrus Brochu of Toronto are ready to take on something daring – The Mongol Rally.

They're traveling across 18 countries, three mountain-ranges, and two deserts.

“Yeah, it's pretty crazy. We're going to be doing a lot of camping I think,” Longhurst says.

And they must travel in a car that has a small engine, Longhurst says “They don't want people driving Hummers around the world because there's no challenge in it, and so if you get a car of less than 1.3 litres, you're guaranteed some sort of adventure.”

The rally has been featured in several television series including Top Gear and Adrenaline Junkie. It's a fundraising adventure that starts in England and ends in Mongolia.

But why are they doing it?

“I was given this opportunity to raise money for charity and to go around the world and see new cultures and experience new things, so I decided to take it,” says Longhurst.

The team, calling themselves the ‘Lumberyaks,’ will be travelling in a 2004 Suzuki Ignis that they bought in England.

Longhurst says they even got permission to name the vehicle after a famous former London resident.

“We actually named it ‘David Suzuki’ and we wrote to the David Suzuki Foundation in Vancouver and got his permission.”

Assuming they reach the finish line, their car will be donated to The Lotus Foundation and sold to raise money for underprivileged children.

They're also raising money for local charities, including the Children's Health Foundation here in London.
