A prominent member of London's multicultural community is facing a several charges following a crash earlier this month at Huron and Highbury Streets.
Deeq Abdi is charged with impaired care or control of a motor vehicle, failure or refusal to provide a breath sample, assaulting a police officer and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.
Abdi tells CTV News the charges stemming from the Sept. 3 crash are false. He says he was a passenger in the car and the driver ran away. He also refutes an officer's claim that he spat on the officer’s shoe.
"I wasn’t driving, that has to be very straight. Somebody was driving my car. Just because it’s my name in the car, that’s why they charged me because they couldn't find the other driver. So that’s something that’s going to go through the courts."
He also says the property obtained by crime charge is the wallet of the driver, left behind.
Abdi is the head of the African Community Council and has served in other leadership roles locally as well, including the London Multicultural Community Association.
