Brian Boyd is more than a regular at the Canadian Blood Services clinic in London.

And on Friday he joined an elite group that includes only three donors in Ontario and 11 across Canada.

Boyd is making his 1,000th donation  - after donating blood for 50 years, starting about age 18 - and saving countless lives.

Asked why he does it, he tells the story of when a man walked into the London clinic, "I'm getting goosebumps just talking about this, he looked at us and he said, 'You people, if it wasn't for you people, I wouldn't be standing here alive.'"

Canadian Blood Services says Boyd donates both whole blood and platelets, but his landmark donation will be one of plasma.

Plasma is used to help patients with bleeding disorders or liver diseases and undergoing operations or cancer and bone marrow therapy.

Boyd received a certificate and a special donor pin for making his 1,000th donation.
