London-based Orgaworld Canada Ltd. has been fined for discharging odours that caused an adverse effect, says the Ministry of Environment.

In response to odour complaints from nearby residents, employees and customers from a business in the area in June 2010, ministry staff attended the composting site and confirmed the presence and source of the off-site odours.

As a result, the company was fined $200,000, plus a victim surcharge fine of $50,000.

Orgaworld operates a composting facility in London that receives and processes municipal organic waste.

Ministry approval requires the facility be operated and maintained to prevent the discharge of odour that would cause an adverse effect. The approval also requires the company take the necessary steps to alleviate an adverse effect.

Orgaworld has until Oct. 31st to pay the fine.
