A south London playground has been completely removed after it was destroyed by vandals over the weekend.

Area residents discovered the torched equipment at Arthur Ford Park on Viscount Road early Sunday morning.

Plastic from the slide and other parts melted into the ground, and damage is estimated at $20,000 to $30,000.

Area residents and park users are expressing frustration, anger and sadness over the needless damage.

Rebecca Sitlington says, "The kids come and enjoy playing here. We like to come here a lot so it's very disappointing for all of them."

Police have not yet made any arrests in connection with the incident, and neighbours are worried.

Ward 10 Councillor Virgina Ridley says, "[London police] Chief Pare does urge residents, if you see suspicious activity, to report it. It's through that data and through those stats that we can increase staffing and patrols in the area."

Anyone with information on the arson incident itself is also encouraged to contact police.

The city is hoping to have new equipment installed before the end of the summer.
