The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority is reminding people to stay away from streams and rivers as melting snow and heavy rain pushes water levels higher.

Steve Sauder of the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority says “It’s the combination of not only the water and the possibility of drowning, but also the possibility of just getting extremely cold.”

More than 25 millimetres of rain were expected through Monday and another 30 to 60 millimetres of water coming from melting snow mean flooding is possible in some areas.

Susceptible locations include: Harris and Gibbons Parks and the North London Athletic Fields/Stoneybrook Recreation Fields in London, Milt Dunnell Fields in St Marys, Avondale Cemetery in Stratford and Southside Park in Woodstock.

With all the rain and snow melt, people are reminded that water is high and fast moving and stream and river banks can be very slippery.

Now that many students March Break, parents are also reminded that any remaining ice on ponds and reservoirs is also unsafe.

The Conservation Authority says while no serious flooding is expected, more updates will be provided if necessary.
