The London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) has submitted an offer to purchase the former Bethesda Centre and the deal is expected to be finalized this week.
The facility at 54 Riverview Avenue is expected to house several programs, including the Adult Eating Disorders Service, a community-based program provided through a partnership between LHSC and the Canadian Mental Health Association Middlesex.
LHSC President and CEO Murray Glendining said in a statement "Both the current outpatient clinic and residential treatment component of the Adult Eating Disorders Services, which are currently located in separate leased spaces in the community, will now be co-located at the new centre. By consolidating both components of the program, we will be better able to serve the needs of the patients and can do so without increasing costs to the hospital."
The program, which helps adults in need of treatment for anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and other eating disorders, has been looking for a permanent home since its establishment in 2012.
The LHSC says letters were sent to area residents earlier this week to notify them of the purchase and a community meeting will be held soon to answer any questions they may have.
The Bethesda Centre closed at the end of May 2012, after the Salvation Army was unable secure $1.5 million in funding to keep the centre open.
It once cared for young mothers in need and their children and attracted international attention after pop star Justin Bieber - who spent time there as a child - promised to help fund it.
