An early morning house fire in Byron has destroyed a home on Stephen Street.

Fire crews were called to 261 Stephen Street on Wednesday just before 3 a.m.

Upon arrival, firefighters were met with flames shooting from the roof of the home.

A smoke alarm alerted the lone occupant of the home, who was sleeping in the basement, and he was able to escape unharmed.

"We are looking at the possibility of animals entering into the attic space, because there is a history of that at this particular home and a few other homes in the neighbourhood, as by the reports of the neighbours,” says fire inspector Frank Galera.

The exact cause of the fire is unknown, but damage is estimated at $250,000.
