A coroner's inquest has been called into the death of an inmate at the Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre.

Jamie High, 40, died on on Dec. 23, 2014 at London Health Sciences Centre. He died following a transfer from the detention centre.  Police determined there was no foul play.

Under the Coroner's Act, a mandatory inquest is required. Dr. Rick Mann, regional supervising coroner, made the announcement Thursday.

The inquest will examine the events surrounding High's death. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths. 

The date and location of the inquest will be provided at a later date.
