Part of the Indian Road overpass at Highway 402 is expected to be closed indefinitely after being struck by a transport truck.

Lambton OPP say a transport truck towing a loaded flatbed trailer was eastbound on Highway 402 when the load struck the bridge around 12:15 p.m.

Officials say it caused a "significant amount of structural damage" to the overpass and left debris across the highway, shutting down the eastbound lanes.

Police are re-routing eastbound traffic from the Bluewater Bridge on to Front Street, then Exmouth Street and back on to Indian Road to access the 402.

The volume of commercial traffic has officials holding vehicles at the border and releasing them intermittently to avoid traffic congestion in Sarnia.

The eastbound lanes of the highway from Front Street to Indian Road are expected to remain closed, and the detour in place, until Thursday, Nov. 26.

A structural engineer from the Ministry of Transportation has been called in to inspect the overpass damage.

The driver of the transport was not injured and police say charges are possible.
