Some Hyde Park residents are desperate to get a traffic light at a corner, they say, is an accident waiting to happen.

The intersection is Hyde Park Road and South Carriage Road and a campaign is underway to get a light there soon.

The president of the local business association says she’s worried about the potential for a serious crash at the intersection.

“It can be very frustrating for drivers who have long waits to get a safe clear space. Typically they will run it and create a dangerous situation for all drivers,” says Donna Szpakowski of the Hyde Park Business Association.

“The other problem is you might get somebody in the first lane stopping, whereas someone in the other oncoming lane is just not stopping. So it's creating a dangerous situation all day, every day.”

As a Ward 7 candidate heading up the campaign, she has more than 600 signatures on a petition.

A traffic study two years ago determined the corner didn’t need lights, but resident Dan Foster says it’s out of date.

“We did a quick survey last week and we found over 1,400 cars through, put in here between 5 and 6 p.m. and there was a couple of very close accidents,” he says.

“We're only one near miss away from a major calamity here.”

With ongoing roadwork causing congestion, it could be hard to determine if there is a traffic light need or if this is a case of drivers getting construction fatigue.

Hyde Park business owner Adrian Plante favours a wait-and-see approach.

“I don't think there is a need for lights until the expansion is done and we see what the traffic flow is like after we have five lanes on Hyde Park Road,” he says.

“It is congested there. It is hard to get out, but at this point, it's jumping the gun a little bit.”

The issue goes before council’s Civic Works Committee Nov. 3

Meanwhile a rally is planned for this Thursday at the intersection at 5 p.m.
