Steven Marshall has been sentenced to six months in jail, three years’ probation and a 10 year prohibition from owning or living with animals in connection with the beating of three cats.

The Hanover man was convicted of five counts of cruelty to animals after three cats were tortured and beaten within a week.

Two of the cats, strays caught by Marshall, died. A third, which belonged to Marshall’s roommate, was seriously injured.

All suffered similar injuries, including broken ribs, brain hemorrhage, broken teeth, bruising and swelling and broken necks.

In a statement Darren Grandel, senior inspector with the Ontario SPCA, said “This was a horrible case of animal cruelty…No animal should ever have to suffer; we encourage the public to call anytime they see acts of cruelty like this.”

The Ontario SPCA asks anyone who is concerned about cruelty to call 1-888-668-7711 or email cruelty@ospca.on.ca.
