TORONTO - A 14-year-old girl is dead after being hit by a truck in northwest Toronto while headed to her first day of classes for the new school year.

The Toronto District School Board has identified the girl as Violet Liang and says she was killed one day before her 15th birthday.

The incident happened just before 8 a.m. Tuesday near Keele Street and Finch Avenue West.

Police say the truck driver remained on the scene but there's no immediate word if charges will be laid.

Education Minister Liz Sandals responded to the tragedy today, saying the province will examine the need for more public safety training for students.

But Sandals says drivers must also pay closer attention now that students are back in school, especially when going through intersections.
