A house fire in Georgian Bluffs has claimed the life of one person and sent another to hospital.

Fire crews were called to the home on Thursday, around 5:30 p.m. for a report of a blaze on 30th Street West, near Park Street.

The Inter-Township Fire Department was able to extinguish blaze, which they believe started in the lower level of the split-level house.

The identity of the deceased has not been confirmed, but neighbours say it is an elderly woman. The name is expected to be officially released following a post mortem scheduled for Saturday in London.

A second victim, a 23-year-old man, was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries and has since been released. He is believed to be the woman's grandson.

There was no one else inside the home at the time of the fire.

Witness report the fire may have started after an explosion involving oxygen tanks, but there is no official word on the cause.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office is assisting with the investigation.
