London police have charged a former Thames Valley District School Board employee who allegedly over-purchased telecommunications equipment and sold over $2 million in items privately.
In August 2014, the board contacted London police after irregularities were detected as a result of a compliance review it conducted.
Police conducted an in-depth eight-month investigation, assisted by the TVDSB.
As a result, it is alleged that the now former TVDSB voice telecommunication specialist over-purchased telecommunications equipment and sold items privately.
"When we uncovered the evidence of potential fraud we contacted police immediately and shortly thereafter the employee was terminated," says TVDSB Director Laura Elliot.
Police say numerous transactions occurred between January 2007 and August 2014, with items valued between $50 and $600 and totalled $2,064,000.
David Ferguson, 55, of London, turned himself in to London police Thursday.
He has been charged with fraud over $5,000, uttering a forged document, breach of trust and possessing proceeds of property or thing obtained by crime.
Elliot adds the findings will got to an audit committee and the details will be made public.
She stresses that the board will be seeking restitution.
"Our board is committed to ensuring we take every legal option available to us to ensure that the funds are recovered," says Elliot.
Ferguson is to appear in court on Thursday.
