Monday marks a watershed moment in the political career of London mayor Joe Fontana.

It will be day one of his criminal trial.

It's expected to last three to four days.

Fontana is charged with fraud under $5000, breach of trust by a public officer and uttering forged documents.

The charges stem from a $1700 federal government cheque that the crown alleges was used to pay the deposit on a 2005 wedding reception for his son.

None of the allegations have been proven in court.

If convicted on all counts, Fontana could face up to ten years in prison.

Fontana has repeatedly stressed that he is innocent.

He has also said he will not step down from his duties as mayor throughout the trial.

A verdict is expected by early-to-mid June.

CTV London will provide extensive coverage on-air as well as on-line throughout the trial.
