The Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority (SVCA) has issued a flood watch for the Municipality of West Grey.

The watch is due to lake effect snow squalls that pummelled the area over the weekend, leading to an excess of slush in the Saugeen River and seeing rising water levels.

According to the SVCA, the dropping temperatures over the next few days is expected to cause loose pieces of ice (frazil ice), which could lead to a further block between the Durham Upper Dam and Durham Middle Dam. A blockage is responsible for current rising water levels.

The public is reminded that the Durham Upper Dam walkway and trail between the Upper Dam and Middle Dam are closed. The community should avoid the area until further notice.

The flood watch will stay in place until Jan. 20 at 4:30 p.m., unless the SVCA says otherwise.
