A female cyclist has been airlifted to hospital after being struck by a car in Huron County.

Emergency responders were called to collision that took place on Blyth Road near Council Line, northeast of Goderich.

Around 8:45 a.m. Huron County OPP and EMS responded to a crash involving a female cyclist.

Police say she was reportedly struck from behind by an eastbound Volkswagen sedan while riding a triathlon-style racing bike and "propelled" into a nearby grass field.

The woman, 41-year-old Julie Sawchuk of Central Huron, was transported to hospital by air ambulance with serious injuries.

Blyth Road was closed for the police investigation between Council Line and McGaw Road for several hours but has since re-opened.

The 45-year-old male driver of the Volkswagen has been charged with "fail to turn out to left to avoid collision with bicycle" under the Highway Traffic Act.

Sharing the road

OPP are reminding drivers of the need to share the roadway, and ensure they can pass cyclists in safety.

If there is an oncoming vehicle, motorists should wait for the next safe chance to pass.

The Making Ontario's Roads Safer Act requires drivers to maintain a minimum distance of one metre when passing cyclists where possible.
