A crash involving a car and a dump truck northeast of London killed a young woman from Woodstock and sent a South Huron man to hospital.

Middlesex County OPP, fire and EMS were called to Medway Road east of Clarke Road around 1:15 p.m. on Monday for a serious crash.

Police say a westbound silver Chevrolet car was attempting to pass a transport truck when it lost control on the south shoulder, struck the trailer of the transport truck and then collided with an unloaded dump truck travelling eastbound on Medway Road.

The 18-year-old female driver of the car, Cassandra Hawkins, of Woodstock, was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries and succumbed to her injuries. There were no passengers in the vehicle.

The 68-year-old male driver, and lone occupant, of the dump truck was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The 29-year-old London man driving the transport truck was not injured.

The OPP Technical Traffic Investigation Team is assisting with the investigation.

Police had closed Medway Road from Clarke Road, east to Olalondo Road, for much of Monday as they completed their investigation.

Chris Friesen, principal at Woodstock Collegiate Institute, released a statement Tuesday saying:

"The WCI family lost an exceptional young person with the passing of Cassie Hawkins. Cassie was a role model of perseverance and strong character to those who knew her. She was a caring individual who was patient, kind and helpful to all.

"She displayed wisdom beyond her years and her strong work ethic resulted in graduating in June and her acceptance to Fanshawe College this September. We are saddened by this tragic event."
