The Elgin Middlesex Detention Centre was on lockdown Monday, with work refusals also impacting daily routines.

The lockdown caused delays in getting some inmates to court today, the Ministry of Community and Correctional Services said.

A spokesperson said the work refusals were “ongoing.”

“As the safety and security of inmates and staff is our top priority, we are working with the correctional officers involved and have engaged the Ministry of Labour as well, to address concerns and resolve this issue."

The facility was also on lockdown in September when there were staff firings, work refusals and prisoner unrest.

No comment was immediately available from OPSEU, the union representing correctional officers.
