Lights, shows, action: Here's what's happening in Edmonton this weekend

There’s still a week before Christmas and that means markets and holiday events are going strong, plus there’s plenty of shows to keep Edmontonians entertained.

Here’s what’s happening in and around Edmonton this weekend.

One of the biggest Edmonton holiday attractions, Candy Cane Lane, is opening Friday. Attendees are asked to bring a food bank donation to the event.

There’s something that makes people Glow this time of year and it’s Edmonton’s biggest indoor holiday winter festival. Glow is on again this weekend and continues until Dec. 31.

If you still need to cross items off your shopping list, the Edmonton Christmas Market is in its final weekend at Fort Edmonton Park.

The plants might be under the snow, but the lights are colouring the night at the University of Alberta Botanic Garden at Luminaria this weekend and the next two weekends.

The only crimes at this mystery event will be too much fun. The Burton Mystery Series at Sunridge Ski Area starts Saturday at 8:30 a.m. Signups are full, but there will be a walk-up waitlist. It’s recommended to arrive early to ensure a spot.

Lights, music and skating can be had in Sir Winston Churchill Square and the City Hall Plaza on Saturday between 4 and 8 p.m.

Don’t sleep in and miss the bus for the ETS Holiday Lights tours happening Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Keep an eye on the sky and the trees for the annual Edmonton Christmas Bird Count on Sunday. For more information or to sign up to participate, head to the count’s website.

It’s not just Edmonton that’s feeling festive, Brighten Up Beaumont is bringing the holiday cheer to residents on Saturday starting at 5 p.m.

The shows must go on

You aren’t seeing things, that tree made of people and singing – the Edmonton Singing Christmas Tree — is back with shows on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Get ready for fun in the metaphorical sun at the Roxy Theatre with Girl Brain: Weekend at Girlies. There are shows Friday, Saturday and Sunday, as well as shows between Dec. 19-22.

After 16 main series titles, it’s a bit of a misnomer, but the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth orchestra is bringing Nobuo Uematsu’s beloved scores and new music from Mitsuto Suzuki and Masashi Hamauzu to the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium Friday.

Always a classic, Handel’s Messiah is back again at the Winspear Centre on Friday and Saturday.

You won’t want to miss your ride and be left behind Saturday, as the the Jubilee will feature Home Alone in Concert at 7:30 p.m.

The lights are on and the music is playing at the legislature this weekend with performances throughout the day on Friday and Saturday.

Is Die Hard a Christmas movie? The debate rages on, but at least Die Harsh: A Christmas Musical has the answer in the name. The show is on at the Grindstone Theatre until Dec. 27.

Get ready to laugh all the way home as Sophie Buddle, featured on The Late Late Show with James Corden and This Hour Has 22 Minutes hits the stage at The Comic Strip Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

If you haven’t had the chance to see The Blank Who Stole Christmas, A Christmas Carol, Little Dickens, Candy Cane Cabaret, Flashback Fever, and More Greased, they’re still on this weekend.

No winter without ‘win’

It’s a Saturday double-feature at Rogers Place as the Oilers look to extend their four-game winning streak as they play the Golden Knights in a 2 p.m. matinee game.

Then, the Edmonton Oil Kings face off against the Swift Current Broncos at 7 p.m. as they try to keep their two-game winning streak alive.

Sunday isn’t a rest day though as the Oil Kings get right back on the ice at Rogers Place for a 4 p.m. game against the Kamloops Blazers.
