OPP officers are warning parents of the dangers of hosting after-prom parties after a teenage girl was allegedly assaulted by another young person at a field party.

Police say a property owner encouraged teens to pay a fee to camp overnight at an unsupervised field party in the Tobermory area last week. Investigators say there had been underage drinking taking place and the incident occurred after the victim had passed out from intoxication.

Property owners can, and have, been held civilly responsible for injuries sustained to persons on their property, say police.

Officers are encouraging parents and caregivers to speak with young people about the dangers of attending such events.

Anyone with information on suspected field parties or unsupervised after-prom parties with underage drinking can contact their nearest police authority at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
