The aunt and uncle accused of locking up their nephew for almost two years, have been released from police custody.

London police confirm the pair was released Friday night after promising to appear in court next month.

Const. Ken Steeves says "We can't keep somebody just because we strongly disagree with the offense they are alleged to have committed. We have rules we have to go by and once they are satisfied we have to release."

The couple does not appear to have returned to the home where the boy was found, and a car previously parked in the driveway was not there late Monday morning.

However, the house remains full of the couple's possessions and family photos.

On Thursday, officers were contacted by the Children’s Aid Society of London and Middlesex (CAS) requesting assistance in checking on the welfare of a child.

Once inside the home, officers say they discovered the 10-year-old boy locked in a filth-ridden master bedroom. He had allegedly been locked in the room for 18 to 24 months.

The boy was transported to hospital, where he was found to be underweight and malnourished. He’s now in the care of CAS.

The couple is charged with failing to provide necessaries for life and forcible confinement.

The names of the guardians are not being released in order to protect the child’s identity.

The couple are set to appear in court on July 10th.
